Beware of interneTIFF

Innomage’s interneTIFF patent software doesn’t work with Firefox 2.0.

Any patent practitioner who has searched the USPTO’s patent database and tried to view patent images has likely struggled with the TIFF format used by the USPTO. Apple’s QuickTime plugin doesn’t render the multipage TIFFs properly. See the USPTO’s help page <> for more info.

We had been using the free AlternaTIFF, but AlternaTIFF lacks some key features, like being able to quickly save an entire patent document as a PDF.

Reluctantly, I purchased four copies of interneTIFF (by Innomage Canada Enterprises, Inc.). Unfortunately, the latest version of interneTIFF does not work with Firefox 2.0. It took a couple of email to Innomage support to convince them of this fact. Through a series of educated guesses, I was able to get interneTIFF working, but I feel like Innomage should be paying me for debugging their installer.

Also, I purchased four copies but got an EULA that says I have only a single-user license. It seems that site licensing starts at five copies. So those who purchase two, three, or four copies have no way to verify that their software is legal. Here’s the language from their EULA:

INNOMAGE grants you the right to install and use one (1) copy of the SOFTWARE on one single user workstation.

I asked Innomage to either send me three additional serial numbers, send me a corrected end-user license agreement, or refund my money so I can purchase four copies in four separate transactions. I also asked for an installer that works with Firefox 2.0, but I’m not holding my breath.

  1. To make InterneTIFF work with Firefox 2.0, run the installer, then do this:

    Copy C:\Program Files\innomage\interneTIFFN\npitiffpro.dll to the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\ directory.

You can also brute-force it to work by copying the contents of the Netscape plugins directory (C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\plugins\*.*) to the Firefox plugins directory (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\).
